There have been very few ethnic-Koreans who voluntarily settled in Taiwan until the turn of the century. Prior to the 20th century, Koreans who were lost in the sea during the Yi dynasty happened to settle in Taiwan. When Korea become japan's colony, few Koreans tried to Taiwan reached to Taiwan via China or Japan, and not directly from Korea, The March First Independence Movement in 1919 caused severe economic difficulties for Koreans, and subsequently made Koreans actively seek means of living in Taiwan.
Although the number of expatriate Koreans in Taiwan was not substantial, forced labor policy, intensive exploration in the fishery sector, and Japan's colonial expansion to the Southeast Asian region led the Korean dispota. Most Koreans in the fishery sector during the Second World Wat period confronted with the difficult transportation route due to taking part in military front. As the Allied Force's bombing became severe, Koreans collectively began to settle in the first port in Taiwan, the Jirung(基隆) region.
The condition initially suggest to the Koreans in the fishery sector faded as the Taiwan government promotes fishery policy to the natives. Koreans were forced to move to other major urban areas such as Taipei, and had began to establish businesses in agriculture and commerce. The change in Korean' participation in the other industrial sector had formmed the basis for the ethnic-Korean communite in Taiwan.
Ethnic-Koreans had become long sojourners in Taiwan. Koreans living in another nation had to go through emotional and financial hardships.
Ethnic-Koreans' hardship can serve as an example of the historical origin of the formation of the Korean communities in Taiwan.
This article has nor sufficiently coveted the scope and procedures related to the historical circumstances of the Korean communities in Taiwan. One of the crucial problems comes from the lack of understanding of the issues related to Koreans in Taiwan, and the lack of available data. Since there is no prior studies on Koreans in Taiwan, most studies lack comparative perspectives, and are based on the subjective perspective, and link historical causation to the 21st century international political circumstance in an objective stance. In conclusion, a joint research project between scholars in Taiwan and Korea become crucial. Also, the joint research would promote collecting relevant data needed for the mutual scholarly work.
