A Q sample consisting of 20 types of essential oil selected from a concourse of 50 oils. typically used in aromatherapy by the National Association of Holistic Aromatherapy and the International Federation of Aromatherapists, was used with 27 college students to identify aroma preference and characteristics. Three subjective aroma preference types were identified and an assessment tool for identifying people of these types was developed. Discussion centers on the importance of identifying aroma preferences types, reflecting the physical. mental and psychological state of the user.
