This essay examines various issues in understanding the life and art of Jeong Seon who laid the foundation for the development of true-view landscape painting in the late Joseon period. There are many articles and books exploring who he was and what he did. Ch’oe Wan-Su has argued that Jeong Seon was a literati painter although it is recorded that he worked at the Bureau of Painting and created paintings for commercial purposes. Ch’oe has further argued that Jeong should be revered as a sage-painter, the most eminent painter in the history of Korean painting. Jeong was born into a poor, undistinguished yangban family. Extreme poverty in his youth led him to pursue his career as a painter. That he worked at the Bureau of Painting and he painted commercially-motivated landscapes for patrons and clients indicates that Jeong was not a literati painter. Ch’oe and other scholars have argued that Jeong was influenced by the idea that Joseon Korea was the true inheritor of Chinese civilization after the fall of the Ming dynasty. They, however, have offered no clear evidence for proving this assertation. They have also claimed that the age of Jeong Seon should be properly called that of “true-view scenery.” This periodization is extremely subjective and even arbitrary. Careful examination of Jeong’s life and social status and his paintings will play a key role in enhancing our understanding of his artistic achievement.
