The native Korean students degree of pronunciation accuracy of Spanish vowels, a well?known cause of the so?called “foreign accent”, can indirectly affect the intelligibility of the messages since the vowels realization impacts the consonants due to the coarticulation process. On the other hand, the nowadays booming communicative approach (CA) presents serious limitations in pronunciation teaching: it gives excessive relevance to fluency and intelligibility over phonetic correction and does not indicate with precision the specific procedures that the teacher should use to correct a particular phonetic or phonological error. Certain methods currently collated along with the communicative approach, such as the technological and the phonological opposition, widely used in recent times for pronunciation teaching, also have proved insufficient. This article investigates the nature and causes of predictable vowel and vowel sequence pronunciation errors due to Korean language (L1) interference in Spanish learners (FL or L2). We use this knowledge to devise corrective strategies using the verbal?tonal resources (combined phonetics, prosody and nuanced pronunciation). The implementation of these strategies could lead to the creation of optimum models which perception and reproduction would facilitate Korean students to achieve a correct pronunciation of Spanish vowels. Consequently, this paper proposes the implementation of the verbal?tonal method for the correction of Spanish vowels and vowel sequences pronunciation errors in native Korean learners.
