This study was conducted to find the possibility of replacing synthetic polymer polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) with a natural polymer starch in manufacturing PVOH-coated paper for food packaging. Accordingly, different amounts of starches containing PVOH were coated on paper. Further, esterification was performed with palmitoyl chloride using the gas chromatography grafting technology. The grafting efficiency was evaluated using the Cobb size value and static contact angle of the PVOH-starch coated paper varying the addition amount of starch.
The addition of starch resulted in an increased Cobb size value and a decreased static contact angle of the coated paper. These changes were proportional to the amount of starch mixed with PVOH, resulting from a reduction in the proportion of the hydroxyl groups available. Therefore, the grafted fatty acid content also decreased with the increasing amount of starch added. However, these results conclude that environment friendly starch can be substituted for PVOH in packaging substrate with hydrophobicity because no significant decrease in the hydrophobicity of the PVOH-starch coated paper was observed with less than 10% of starch.
