Nowadays, the architectural culture of Korea has been disengaged
from the character of traditional architecture by introducing the
theories of modern architecture, since the 60's. As the reaction
upon this condition, the necessity of the study on the regional
architecture which is based on the cultural tradition has become
influential. The object of study is in the grasping the character
of modern detached houses through the understanding the process of
combining the new factor of culture with the traditional factor of
culture. The process of study is as follows; First, grasping the
social and environmental character and the unique factor of
traditional housing in Cheju. Second, understanding the extent of
architect's recognition on the regional character. Third, analizing
the regional character of modern detached houses(1980-1990year) in
Cheju, in terms of the process which the social and environmental
characters are taking shape as a house
In view of result achieved, a conclusion that the resional
characters of morden detached houses in cheju were a universial
characteristic being based on the combining the architectural
background of the other region with the social, environmental factor
and the unique factor of traditional architecture in Cheju.
