In this thesis I examine Chae Man-Sik's novels, Escape from the doll's house(l933) and A lady's life story0944-1945) focused on female characters. As Chae Man-Sik's first and last novel, these two novels show how he recognized female characters under the rule of Japanese Imperialism and represent contrary female characters, Old-woman and New-woman. In his novels, female characters are positioned in the outer edge of master narrative in the regard of male characters, even though female is a prime mover which operates his novel.
In Escape from the doll's house female protagonist, Nora represents a symptom which male subject can't fulfill his desire in that time. In A lady's life story, female-mother is regarded as a device of self-rationalization which male subject can't but help Japanese Imperialism under cruel situation by positioning male subject in female family tree. At this time male subject reveals as concealed or disappeared in the surface of text. Therefore Chae Man-Sik's female characters are the others of male characters.
The colonized male subject is doomed to be otherized because he is kept down by Japanese Imperialism Because of a recognition of crisis, Chae Man-Sik's colonized male characters reverse their otherized position as the position of 'subject'. This reverse functions as critical gesture of colonized reality in Chae Man-Sik's novels. Colonized male subject articulates a gaze of Japanese colonial subject to recover his lost power and give back his momentary powerful gaze to female by otherizing her. For that reason, female of colonized nation-state is double positioned by a colonial Japanese subject and a colonized Chosun male.
