This study aims to analyse the unconscious and the desire of the characters in the novels of the Korean post-war. The Korean post-war novels have relation with the trauma of Korean war. This trauma influence nor only the individual but also the history and literature. So the characters in the novels of the Korean post-war has peculiar psychological aspects. This paper attempts to elucidate that this aspects is originated from the traumatic memory of the war.
Especially Son Chang-seop's novels, Chang Yong-hak's novels and Sea Gi-won's novels represented this kind of psychological aspects. In Son Chang-seop's novels, the characters as the subjects regress to the subjects of the Imaginary who cannot distinguish between the subject and the others. So their desire is very vague. The moment to realize theirselves as subjects is the other's death. In Chang Yong-hak's novels, the characters feel the disillusionment about the modernity because of the Korean war. And they feel the nostalgia to the future as returned past. So they have the desire of transcendence. The death of the character has meaning of the resistance to the absurd modernity. In Seo Gi-won's novels, the characters are subjectified through the dis-identity of the others. They have nostalgia to the identity of the pre-war era. So they have desire to the reconstruction of the identity as the subject. However they can depart to reconstruct the subject only through the death.
As the result of this analysis, this paper elucidates that subjects in Korean post-war novels cannot find their places and roles in the Symbolic. The relation between the subject and the other, and the relation between the subject and the Symbolic are distorted as the result of the trauma of the Korean war. So the characters feel nostalgia to the past or to the future. Finally this paper's conclusion is that the peculiar psychological aspects in Korean post-war novels are death drive and nostalgia thar is caused by the traumatic memory of the Korean war.
