Family and its relation to religion has continued to dominate the discourses from ancient philosophies through
psychoanalytic interpretations to contemporary social sciences. Little attention has been given, however, to the problem of the family-religion relation in the context of global transformation. This article attempts to situate family life-orientation in the process of globalization and suggest the need to break through the narrow confines of familism and make new identities and life-orientations suitable for the global age. This cannot be achieved without reconstructing the existing moral and religious orientations.
The Korean family, influenced by Confucian ethos, has established such an inner and private space apart from the public world. Family life has been increasingly invaded by outside forces, most of all, by the triumphant economic forces, notably since the nation began massive industrialization i11 the 1960s. This combination of family-centeredness and economic thrust has put limitations on our ability to actively participate as 'citizens' in the ever-widening community, widening to the point of globality.
This article argues that family life-orientation can go beyond the frame of family-centered utilitarianism and assume the place where one experiences a 'sacred' aspect of life. It is this than through 'caring' a11d 'sacrifice' as 'religious' sources, i11 the Durkheimian sense, that leads family life-orientation to stand above self-interest and move into the shared forms of life.
