At the end of the nineteenth-century there appeared the blurring of the boundary between man/woman, masculinity/femininity, heterosexuality/homosexuality. Before this there used to be a separate distinction between these binary terms and there was a hierarchical order: man is superior to woman, masculinity is more important than femininity, and heterosexuality must be maintained while homosexuality must be silenced. So the terms like “dandy,” “new woman,” and “the homosexual” which threatened the Victorian sexual ideology appeared during this period. Oscar Wilde was one of those rebels who fought against the Victorian conceptions of gender and sexuality because his life and his works reveal that he tired to subvert the Victorian ideals of masculinity and heterosexuality.
Wilde introduced the theme of male love into The Picture of Dorian Gray. This homosexual theme must be a dangerous subject to deal with at that time; however, Wilde showed the bravery to deal with this subject very sympathetically. So the triangular relationship among Basil Hallward, Henry Wotton, and Dorian Gray has an appealing power to the readers, and finally the homosexual love among these men is described as a love which can save our souls, or can give regenerative power to our spirit. Especially I put emphasis on the relationship between Basil and Dorian because their relationship must be a central meaning in this novel. Their love ends unfortunately partly because Basil has a guilty feeling toward his love for Dorian, and partly because the homophobic Victorian society forbids that kind of love for him. So this novel has a political meaning to give individuals sexual freedom by abolishing the “1885 Criminal Law Amendment Act 11” which banned any kind of sexual acts between adult men at that time.
This paper also tried to trace Wilde's contradictory impulses to erase the homosexual theme like the frame of heterosexual relationship between Sibyl Vane and Dorian, the disappearance of worshippers of Dorian into an anonymous crowd, and finally the parallel between homosexuality and sodomy.
