The main purpose of this study is to provide basic informations regarding the proposal of the seismic rehabilitation and post-earthquake damage evaluation methods for RC buildings in Korea by reviewing applicabilities of the Japanese Standards. The Japanese Guideline for Post-earthquake Damage Assessment of RC buildings, revised in 2001, was developed to classify damage state of RC buildings that had suffered damage during earthquakes. In the Guideline, the state of damage of each structural member is first classified into one of the five classes. The damage state of the entire building is then determined from the residual seismic performance index, i.e., R-index. The R-index is calculated based on the seismic performance reduction factor (η-factor) for structural members corresponding to the damage classes. In this paper considered is the basic concept of the Guideline. This paper discusses the damage rating procedures based on the residual seismic capacity index R, the ratio of residual seismic capacity to the original capacity, that is consistent with the Japanese Standard for Seismic Evaluation of Existing RC Buildings, and also an example using a damaged RC building is investigated herein.
