The N(Net) Generation has arrived. To them, the digital technology is no more intimidating than a VCR or toaster. For the first time in history, children are more comfortable, knowledgeable and literate than their parents about an innovation central to society. And it is through the use of the digital media that the N-Generation will develop and superimpose its culture on the rest of society. They are a force for social transformation. In this sense, there is no issue more important to parents, teachers, policy makers, marketers, business leaders, and social activists than understanding what this younger generation intends to do with its digital expertise.
The N Generation is a break from the cynicism which has surrounded the discussion of Generation X and Generation Y. In fact, they were viewed as a bitter, disenfranchised, and negative group. The N Generation is defined by something positive. They are breaking from the one-way. centralized media of the past and are beginning to shape their own destiny. The N Generation has 5 themes as consumers. First, they want options. The availability as of choice is a deeply held value in the N -Gen culture. Second, it is N-Gen customization. N-Geners want highly customized services and products. Third, they want to change their minds in the everyday life, whether in the marketplaces or in the Web site. Fourth, they try before buy. N-Geners are not viewers or listeners or readers. They are users. Fifth, technology doesn't dazzle-function counts. Unlike the baby boomers who witnessed the technological revolution, N-Geners have no awe of the new technology.
