The aim of the study was to examine that effects of stretching(ST) and warm-up(WP) prior to participate in marathon on DOMS. Sixteen (males and females) University students were recruited and various markers (i.e., LDH and CK activity, VAS, and pain score) were measured during recovery periods. Major findings from this study were as follows:
1. The highest LDH activity was observed at day 2 in both ST and WP, but ST showed a relatively higher LDH activity than WP. Although LDH activity gradually decreased throughout the recovery period (p<.001), there was no statistical difference between ST and WP.
2. After completion of marathon, there was somewhat difference trend observed: while ST group recorded their highest value at recovery day 1, WP showed their highest value at recovery day 2. For both groups, there was a significantly difference in CK level during recovery period, but it was not shown any significant differences between two groups.
3. WP group has shown a significantly faster recovery trend compared to ST (p<.001) when VAS and pain score were considered. It was also shown the period for disappearance of pain was shorter with WP (6 days) than ST (9 days) (p<.001).
Based on these results, it was concluded that performing stretching prior to marathon race does not prevent occurrence of DOMS. It was also concluded that WP may exerts a better effect to shorten for both degree of DOMS and period of DOMS.
