Although much attention has been shown to the penthouse mostly in respect to its high price or its huge size, little scholarly work has been conducted on the topic of the penthouse.
The main objective of this study is to analyze the conditions of the residential environment of penthouse apartments on super-highrise residential buildings in the city of Seoul. Along with the illumination of the definitions of super-highrise building and the term of penthouse, the early part of the paper attempts to identify criteria for the analysis of the quality of residential environment by collecting and categorizing the terms used to describe penthouse apartments. Based on the keyword extracted from the case studies, analysis criterions were grouped into three categories; Value(economic, social, and image), Living Environment(location, view, daylight, size, interior space, exterior space, and formal typology), Behavioral Pattern(privacy and life style). The research of 183 cases of penthouse apartments carried out through analysis criterions under these three categories features penthouse apartment's exceptional quality of residential environment distinguished from normal repetitive apartment units. The result also shows the differences between two groups of the cases based on the completion date; one completed before 2006 and the other to be completed after 2006.
