Although there are various approaches to the question of European integration, this article performs a critical test of the so-called ‘realist’ approach. Milward and his schools's views, which tried to attest the “rescue” of nation-states in European integration in the postwar period, are the main target. Milward regarded “European saints” like Robert Schuman, Alcide De Gasperi and Konrad Adenauer as realist national politicians who eagerly wished to defend the national interests, rather than as ideal federalists. However, despite many achievements in explaining the process of European unity, this kind of view cannot deal effectively with a number of evidence that they were not mere political pragmatists without any ideals. Taking into consideration that they were all christian democrats, this article attempts to attest the special relationship between christian democratic ideas and European integration, focusing on the cases of Italy and Germany.
It is important to remember that political catholicism tendentiously favored internationalism over nationalism. And yet we must not overlook the crucial factors such as the force of circumstances and the ingenuity of able politicians like De Gasperi and Adenauer. It is also important to remember that the peculiar conditions of the postwar era such as the memory of fascism and war, the cold war, and the statecraft of De Gasperi and Adenauer made it possible for ECSC to emerge as a substantial model of European Community. In particular, De Gasperi and Adenauer's pro-European and intransigent anti-communist ideas contributed to the creation of the Europe of Six, which implemented the policy of ‘beginning with the West’ and the Atlantic option.
To sum up, there was a convergence between Italian and German national interests on the one side and European integration on the other, in the postwar conditions. It seems that christian democratic ideas represented by both De Gasperi and Adenauer led such a convergence to a Community institution, serving the political as well as the socio-economic interest of each nation. Therefore, a combination of ideal motive and the Realpolitik was one of the most important features of the early years of European integration.
