This paper investigated whether the changes in subsurface thermal structure can be related to the variability of the El Nino. The equatorial long waves associated with ENSO dynamics were decomposed in terms of vertical baroclinic mode using data from ocean assimilation system. It is suggested that the second baroclinic mode is essential to determine the amplitude and duration of warm event. In addition, at the transition time of 1997-1998 El Nino, the second mode also contributes to initiation of cold event. These results became a motivation of the further study to better predict the interannual variability in terms of vertical baroclinic modes.
