The aim of this paper is to study naturalism of literature in Baek Daejin's articles in Korean newspaper under colonial times. His articles are advocacy of naturalism in Chosun, expectation of the advent of naturalist at the beginning of the New Year, and the new research of literature. Therefore I know that Baek's literary view point was the good of literature and he expressed naturalism and realism in his articles to show the good of literature. Also, He emphasizes "the powerful sentences" on the writing method and "the human's emotion, such as the human's problems and the misery of society" on the content. So I know that his aims of literature are "the knowledge and morality" on the practicalism and "providing the human with much pleasure" on the pleasure.
Back's novels which I studied in this paper are the first grade tag, The moon of the foreign country and an empty dream. Compared with the Korean old novels, his novels show the variety of the characters, the verisimilitude of description and the character's depravity. Especially, the real description of the negative aspect of the society shows the capability of naturalism novels. Second, He intended to reveal the enlightenment with the voice over narration in his novels. Third, the plot of his novels is composed of the editor's comment, the presentation of the character, the showing of the event and the editor's comment. fourth, Despite his novels have the condition of naturalism on the materials like the vice of modernism, the human's ugly nature and poverty and so on, they aren't embodied completely according to lack of his writhing style.
Baek's literary theory can be known as the first naturalism across 1910s. Also he showed the readers Korean reality through the real description of the dark side of the society, not the infusion of a certain idea or thought. Consequently, he build up the foundation theory of the critical realism in 1920s.
