This study aims at the review of treating and describing collocations in the Korean Dictionary for International Learners. When we compile a learner's dictionary, it is very important to consider the needs of dictionary users. The dictionary for international learners must have not only a function of reading comprehension but also a function of producing a text apart from a function of providing information. Accordingly, for the compilation of the learner's dictionary, collocations play an important role because knowing co-occurrence relations of collocations and using them properly in context are necessary for speaking and writing.
Considering the importance of collocations in learner's dictionary, I don't define a boundary of collocations very strictly. I include some free sequences like 'a dog barks', 'a cat mews' in my category of collocations. Contrary to native speakers, foreign learners don't have intuition in using these co-occurred expressions and they can acquire them only by studying. That's why I have this bigger category of collocations than one of Korean linguistics.
This paper introduces the design of the micro-structures and contents of the Korean Dictionary of International Learners. This dictionary makes a rule to describe collocations not in a collocate but in a base as dictionary entry. On this principle, we have some criteria to choose collocations among various idiomatic expressions and some lexicographic rules to describe collocations in the dictionary.
Through this study, we could know how various aspects of the lexical and grammatical analysis of composite units can be presented lexicographically in a form which meets the productive needs of the foreign learner. Although we are often confronted with difficulties in treating collocation in learner's dictionary, we have to describe collocations more explicitly and systematically compensating problems like indeterminacy and arbitrariness with databases like a corpus for international learners.
