This study intends to discover the developing process and fundamental characters of Realism in British Art which had not been seriously discussed so far, and grasps it as an independent art historical trend. Through this discussion, 19th-century Realism, which had been centered around France, shall be understood with an enlarged vision that includes the Victorian Britain.
This study sets a few standards in order to clarify the realistic attitudes shown in 19th-century British art; the first was that the painting deals with the theme of labor and poverty, which had been noted as a social issue; second was that it also contains the social perspectives of the middle class who looks at the theme; the third is that it conforms with reality based on observation.
When realism is discussed with the aforementioned standards, Realism in British art is a trend raised among artists who produced illustrations for 'Graphic' since 1869, rather than a phenomenon manifested as a tributary of genre painting and realist literature in the midst of laborers' movements circa 1848, as previous scholars discussed it.
In the Graphic', themes of social reality were treated in an elitist point of view by the new generation who was trained to paint based on direct observation. A hero in the modern age was not a genius, but a mediocre human being with a strong will to stand up against hardships in real life. This proposes one of the modern attitudes that poverty was conquerable in the end through a new concept of heroism.
