This study examines George Eliot’s feminist idealism. The feministic aspect George Eliot expressed in The Mill on the Floss seems vague and obscure in some respects as opposed to being recognizable and definitive with clear boundaries. This study suggests that such obscurities can serve as clues to a new, alternative interpretation. It seems that Eliot’s vagueness and obscurity originate from her own a priori intuition that transcends the generation and the philosophy of her times.
As an interpretational tool, this study uses the dual structure of Eliot’s idealistic perspective and its more realistic practice. In such a structure, Eliot’s feminism is understood as a will to extend beyond the feminism of her times or an alternative for future. Moreover, applying this method of interpretation to an example that most strongly reflects the obscurity of Eliot’s feminism, including the death of Maggie and Tom leads to a more proactive and positive criticism. For example, the conflict and opposition she imbued in Tom and Maggie and their subsequent death in The Mill on the Floss can be interpreted as the reflection of Eliot’s propensity towards an idealistic harmony, and the reconciliation of femininity and masculinity based on realism.
This study concludes that the death of Tom and Maggie in The Mill on the Floss, which is often regarded as the limitation of Eliot’s feminism or conservative attitude, can also be interpreted as her positive exploration and proactive practice of an idealistic harmony between femininity and masculinity that extends beyond the philosophical trends of her time.
