Western theology today does not stop at the finding of theoretical knowledge, but it has a tendency to highlight the practical aspect of theology. Within theology, this emphasis on the practice has naturally paved the way for us to reflect on the nature of practical theology. practical theology has evolved from the application of theories to taking the lead in the changes in men. and societies within its interaction with the theories. Thus, practical theology is now best understood as public theology.
Moreover, it is not limited to the sphere of church and theology. It has been researched alongside other disciplines in a comprehensive manner. In this aspect, one can propose that practical theology is a discipline that is in sight of a new horizon. However, practical theology still carries the characteristic of applied disciplines which is its capability to satisfy the need of individuals, churches, and our society through an objective analysis of the subject and the theories.
In contrast, the study of spirituality is negative towards inferential, objective, and subjective knowledge. It is self-implicating discipline whereby a researcher who is in charge of the study of spirituality participates as an object of study. Fundamentally the study of spirituality examines the process in which human beings transcend themselves in search for the ultimate reality while consciously consolidating their lives. Here, the fact that it consolidates and enhances individual's life through the experience of fundamental reality is practical. Nevertheless, the study of spirituality continually seeks out the experience of self-transcendence and detailed reality of human existence. In this sense, the study of spirituality provides a theoretical foundation for practical theology.
Likewise, the encounter between two similar yet distinct disciplines will create a synergy effect, bringing benefits to each other whether that should be in practical theology and theology.
