This essay aims to analyze William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies and its two film adaptations, produced by Peter Brook in 1963 and by Harry Hook in 1990. Comparing the source text with the faithful film adaptations, I tried to illuminate differences between novel narrative and film narrative, and evaluate each director’s “reading” of the novel.
Golding deals with the conflict between good and evil in human nature in Lord of the Flies. A group of boys, isolated in an uninhabited island and separated from the grownup’s civilized society, come to lead their lives by themselves, but soon lose their control, lapse into a disordered way of life, and succumb to the evil inherent in human nature. This corruption symbolizes human being’s inherent cruelty and evil nature. Golding creates a modern fable on human being’s essential evil in Lord of the Flies.
Director Peter Brook’s film succeeds in delivering this modern fable’s effects shockingly through vivid images and various film techniques in his black and white movie. His use of various camera angles, still pictures in the opening scene, and various arrangement of characters in the frame, represents complex human situation and dilemma effectively. On the other hand, Harry Hook’s color film fails to deliver Golding’s profound insight into human nature to the audience, because he simplifies the characterization of Ralph and Jack as incarnations of good and evil, and doesn’t use film techniques like shots, angles and images effectively.
