This study investigated whether structural priming occurs from English (L2) to Korean (L1) in unbalanced bilingual production and whether L2 proficiency modulates bilingual syntactic processing. The experiment exploited an auditory sentence recall cross-linguistic structural priming paradigm used in Shin and Christianson (2009) with dative structures in English and Korean. The results showed that cross-linguistic structural priming from L2 to L1 did not occur; instead, the effects of L1 target sentences were found. Moreover, the results showed no L2 proficiency effects in L1 production, while L2 proficiency effects were observed in L2 production through the reanalysis of Shin and Christianson's data considering L2 proficiency. The overall results revealed that L2 did not influence syntactic processing in L1 production, and cross-linguistic structural priming is limited to proficient L2 speakers. However, as L2 proficiency increases, bilingual syntactic processing can be shared and the procedural knowledge of two languages can interact. Therefore, this study suggested that the nature of bilingual syntactic processing in production is asymmetrical but developmental as proficiency increases.
