초록·키워드 목차

Analyzed in this article, are the maps that were inserted inside the nationally authorized Korean History("National History") textbooks, from the 2nd version to the 6th version("versions" refer to the installments that were created for each of the curriculum systems: "2nd version" would refer to a specific version of a textbook that was created as part of the "2nd Curriculum system"). Those maps do reflect the political and social atmosphere, of the time they were published. As a result, the overall themes explored in selecting particular maps to be inserted in textbooks, and the overall composition and positioning of such maps inside the textbooks, have varied from one version to the next.
In the "2nd version" textbooks, maps describing the condition of the state and country were mainly inserted. In the "3-1st version," there were less maps containing information about the 'Northern history,' and more maps describing resistance against foreign invasions and maps describing the Koreans' outward activities. Then in the "3-2nd version," many maps regarding wars and the state authority were inserted as well. We can see that all the "3rd version" textbooks were indeed designed to perform the role of legitimatizing the "Yu'shin" system(of granting the President with almost unlimited power). In the 4th version, maps of world history were added, which also emphasized the Koreans' successful ventures, while revealing a negative viewpoint with regard to the people's revolts and insurgences.
Then in the "5th version" textbook, the overall number of maps actually jumped. Such maps generally emphasized the significance of the history of Gojoseon, and displayed a complicated perspective to view the Unified Shilla and Balhae. They also exhibited an active interest in the people, and maps that underlined the Koreans' overall efforts and achievements in the Korean modern development actually increased too. Both the external influences upon and domestic responses toward the overall modernization process of Korea are expressed in those maps as well.
Yet the "6th version" shows a 'return' to what the textbooks were like before the 5th version. The government's role in resisting foreign invasions are emphasized, and a certain self-serving perspective can be detected in descriptions of the country's foreign relationships. #국정국사교과서 #역사지도 #세계지도 #유신(維新) #고조선 #통일신라 #발해 #National Korean History textbook #History maps #Maps of world history #Yu'shin #Gojoseon #Unified Shilla #Balhae
