One of the most noticeable points in the study of The Master and Margarita( Master i Margarita, 1966) which is the last novel of Mikhail Bulgakov would be that author's awareness of reality is directly reflected in 'the Moscow Chapters' whose stage is Moscow and that author's belief in Jesus' existence is reflected in 'the Jerusalem Chapters' whose stage is Jerusalem. For this, Bulgakov had certain principles in the composition of The Master and Margarita and in choosing a style of narrative and narrator. While he described Moscow as a place full of unfounded gossips, hypocrisy, falsehood, and rumors, in 'the Jerusalem Chapters', the Master's novel, by means of clearly differed style of narrative and narrator, author's belief in Jesus' existence and the Bible becomes clear. The two contrasting texts which compose The Master and Margarita : 'the Moscow Chapters' which contain the meeting of the evil Voland with the Master and Margarita and 'the Jerusalem Chapters' which is a master's novel making up 'the novel in the novel' containing the story of Yeshua. They are all tightly connected and arranged, and show a striking contrast. Contrary to 'the Moscow Chapters' which is full of falsehood and conspiracy, author's intent to prove what happened in Jerusalem two thousand years ago as a truth and a fact becomes lucid through the style of narrative.
An aspect of falsehood and confusion in the Moscow Chapters are especially strongly highlighted with the appearance of Voland and the image of Moscow as a synthetic stage of 'Simulacres' is being reinforced. The evil Voland is the one who is trying to prove his evil existence by proving God's existence and also justify his existence as like Simulacres. Moreover, as the transcendental evil Voland appears in Moscow, the expansion of Simulacres over time and space is done throughout whole Moscow. This kind of time is 'Simulacrestic time' that has unrealistic dream and hypnotizing effect, and illusive time through Voland's magic and evil's or Satan's hypnotism. The two critical places where Simulacrestic character is intensified in the Moscow texts are 'the Variety theatre' and an apartment where Voland holds 'The great ball of Satan'.
The image of Moscow as a synthetic place of Simulacres is intensified in the narrative through repeatedly sustaining motifs such as gossip, uncleanness, noise, and falsehood. The recurring the indefinite pronoun and the sentences without pronoun have an effect in making the events and information unreliable. This has similar function as gossips that do not have reliable sources and origin. The indefinite pronoun and the sentences without pronouns, which are remarkably repeated in the Moscow text, create unfounded and irresponsible narration and are connected with the image of unreliable narrator. This leads to make up the chaotic and false image of Moscow creating a hell and total chaotic situation. This narrative becomes 'narrative of simulation' that intensify Simulacrestic image of Moscow and bonded to the main theme of the novel, which is Moscow and the life of Soviet with full of falsehood and hypocrisy.
