Definition information is the important part of dictionary compiling. The purpose of this paper is to introduce definition informations of Korea University Korean Dictionary(hereinafter referred to the KUKD), and to identify its benefits.
The characteristics of definition information contained in KUKD are represented in three aspects; active reflection of real language, dictionary user oriented lexicography, integration of the various Korean linguistic researches. Especially, every headwords are defined directly for improving user’s understanding, not replaced a word that has same meaning. Direct definition consisted of analytic definition and metalinguistic definition. At the polysemy headwords, each multiple senses are arranged in frequency order. And the basic meaning is indicated as a shadowed circle-character.
We introduced the principle and method of meaning description in KUKD, also examined the microstructure concerned in definitions; part of speech, morphological and syntactic restrictions, sentence patterns, thematic role and pragmatic information.
