The purpose of this study is to explore the direction of sexual ethics education for pastors. Until recently, Western theological seminaries have not took much concern about sexual ethics education for pastors and theological students. This phenomenon is also shown in Korean theological seminaries. However, pastor’s sexual misconduct is still being revealed in the Korean context. Especially, mega-church pastor’s sexual misconduct is happening, and it gives a shock not only to Christians but also to people in general. In this sense, it seems that the issue of pastor’s sexual misconduct should be dealt in the public sphere without hindering the issue within churches. The discussion of this issue can includes the reasons of pastor’s sexual misconduct and precautionary measures. This sort of action can be considered that Korean churches have the opportunity to a new leap forward.
The study consists of four parts. Firstly, we try to look for the reasons of pastor’s sexual misconduct. They include the liberal attitude toward sex, lack of sexual ethics education in theological seminaries, and the causes resulted from the structure of church ministry. Secondly, the present condition of sexual ethics education in Korean theological seminaries is examined. Here, we find the lack of the education which brings students to not have the opportunity to cope with sexual matters. Thirdly, the present condition of sexual ethics education in American theological seminaries is explored. Sexual ethics education in America is being more emphasized than the one in Korea. Fourthly, the direction of sexual ethics education for pastors and theological students is suggested. I hope that this article would be helpful to Korean theological seminaries in terms of sexual ethics education.
