In 612 Koguryo won landslide victory against Sui in Koguryo-Sui War overcoming its inferiority in military strength. This paper analyses the 612 war focusing on espionage.
Summary of my findings are as follows:
Firstly, Koguryo’s espionage against Sui had been before Sui dynasty and had continued during the Sui dynasty itself.
Thirdly, in many occasions Koguryo was able to delay or block attacks of Sui through strategy and tactics using circumstances properly. This success is likely due to the information obtained by espionage.
Fourth, Koguryo’s spies might be able to penetrate into deep inside of Sui government.
Finally, general Euljimoonduk(을지문덕)’s tactics/strategy in ‘Battle of Salsoo(살수전투)’ was possible only on the basis of knowing Sui’s weakness in advance and well.
In short Koguryo was able to win the landslide victory against Sui in 612 despite of its inferiorly in military strength. That is mainly because Koguryo overshadowed Sui in terms of strategy and tactics which were based on information through espionage.
