“Is it possible to teach religion in a public school?” This is a very important question for us to propose, especially in today’s multi-religious context. There is a recent tendency to exclude all religious themes from education, because they are laden with sensitive issues and values. Modern education presupposes that education be neutral and value-free. However, is it right that all education should be value-neutral? Moreover, is such an education possible? The modern history of school education can be described as the history of separation between education and religion. Public education has excluded religion from all its areas of education. However, religion takes on a crucial role in human life. Countless issues and historical events are related to religion, whatever kind, and in order to understand the real meaning of history, it is necessary for us to know its correlation with religion. Religion gives us a view into the transcendental dimension, moral values, and that which should be the real end of education. Religion is not limited to the private domain, but is part of the public domain. Stephen H. Webb points out that teaching religion in the school is necessary, especially in a democratic society. Public education should involve religion, so that students can be invited to understand and experience diverse religions.
There are two kinds of approach to religious education in public education. One is teaching about religion. This is more of an academic approach to religious education. Schools can help students to understand the phenomena of religion in human society, and the doctrines and characteristics of many different religions. The other is teaching religion itself. This means helping students experience religious life in itself. It focuses on faith rather than religiosity. In order to teach religion, it is important that students participate in specific processes of liturgy involving a particular religion. Since religion is something to be experienced, not learned or memorized, religious education within public education in Korea should pursue the second kind of approach to religious education.
The Korean church has a responsibility to support schools in establishing a legitimate approach to religious education. The Korean church should inform schools of the importance of religious education for students’ well-rounded development. In accordance, the Korean church should establish an institution for the expansion of religious education in public education. Especially, the Korean church must take on the task of making well-designed textbooks for religious education in public education, and an effective training program for religious teachers. Religious education in public education could be a new approach to evangelism in schools, even though it would be an indirect way of mission.
