The purpose of this study was to promote effects of oral hygiene education for patients and guardians by comparing the amount by bacterial form inside the mouth and a change in motility depending on before and after oral hygiene management through using the phase contrast microscope. The survey subjects were 86 people who have no systemic disease from September 2007 to March 2008 targeting patients for preventive dentistry at Dental College Hospital. The bacterial amount and motility were surveyed by dividing bacteria inside the mouth by form before and after toothbrushing for 42 people and before and after oral prophylaxis for 44 people. The following conclusions were obtained. 1. The amount in cocci, bacillus, and comma/spiral reduced after toothbrushing. The statistically significant difference was indicated(p<0.01). Even the amount of filament reduced. The statistically significant difference was indicated(p<0.05). 2. The motility in bacillus, filament, and comma/spiral reduced after toothbrushing. The statistically significant difference was indicated(p<0.01). 3. The amount in cocci, bacillus, and comma/spiral reduced after oral prophylaxis. The statistically significant difference was indicated(p<0.01). 4. The motility in filament and comma/spiral reduced after oral prophylaxis. The statistically significant difference was indicated(p<0.01). A factor of oral microorganism, which causes oral disease, needs to be regulated through oral hygiene management. A research of this oral microorganism management method needs to be continuously developed.
