Based on the method of translational stylistics put forward by Malmkjær (2004), this paper gives a stylistic analysis of two translations of the American English novel The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. For this purpose, the basic assumption taken in this study is that a translator’s (writing) choice of a word/phrase or structure reflects his or her cognitive state of how he or she views the world or the literary world in his or her cognition, called ‘mind style’ in Fowler(1977). The main focus has been put on how two Korean translations translated the source text"s general purpose link conjunction ‘and’ sentences. What has been found is that in the two translated texts, logical connectives such as ‘-아서’(then, because) ‘-아’(then, because) ‘-는데’(background) and ‘-면서’(during) are dominantly used in the place of the English ‘and’ conjunction whose function is known to be a general purpose link, being different from those logical connectives such as ‘therefore’ and ‘so.’ The statistical result of this paper shows that the style of the two translated texts of using those logical connectives runs against the trend of modern novels which use few logical connectives as attested in J. Joyce’s Ulysses (Leech and Short 1981/2007). Although the two translated texts are not much different from each other in terms of the frequency of logical connectives, one of them, TT2 in this study appears to have used noticeable numbers of two juxtaposed sentences without any connective. Since the ‘zero (ø) connective’ took the fourth in the frequency of the connectives used in TT2, it has been taken as a style marker and given a stylistic analysis in this paper.
