This study investigates how the change in industrial diversification evaluated as the entropy index during the 1993-2010 in 5 wide-economic zones influences on the growth and stability of the regional economy. We set some research hypotheses related to the industry-specific strategies of the region and examine whether or not they are statistically valid. The main results from this empirical analysis are summarized as follows. First, there is no relationship between economic growth and employment stability of the region. Second, there exists an inverse U-shaped nonlinear relationship between the degree of industrial specialization and economic growth of the region. Third, it is desirable that in the viewpoint of economic growth only, some regions have industry-specific strategies and others pursue strategies to increase industrial diversity. Finally, there exists a U-shaped nonlinear relationship between the degree of industrial specialization and employment stability of the region, and it is different in regions. Therefore, the conventional wisdom that there is the trade-off between economic growth and employment stability of a region in the short term is not always feasible. In other words, the policy goals of economic growth and employment stability in a region can be pursued together from the perspective of the long-term strategy.
