Commemorating the 90th anniversary of the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1922, this paper examines recent Korean and Japanese scholarship on Korean massacres following the earthquake. In Korea, these massacres have not received much attention뾪ost of the attention consisting of autobiographies involving the event. However, from 2000 there has been a shift in Korean scholarship with more attention given to the massacres by Korean researchers. The new research shows how the massacres have been mainly described in Japanese and Korean literary works. The new research presented in this paper takes an important first step, but still lacks a historical perspective on the massacre of Koreans that occurred after the earthquake.
In Japan, since 1963 (the 40th anniversary of the earthquake) Zainichi Korean and Japanese researchers have tried to elucidate the history of the Korean massacres despite their deliberate concealment by the Japanese government. Focusing on recent scholarship in Japan, this paper also investigates changes in research on the event since its 85th anniversary. Yamada Shoji and the Senshu University Research Group show that Japanese scholarship dealing with the massacres has shifted towards "studies of self-awareness". However, the problem with this type of research is that it does not deal with the Korean massacres in the framework of Japanese modern history and, as such, the incident is essentially ignored in East Asian modern history.
