This paper discusses construction meaning of ‘?着’ from construction grammar perspective.
So far, most studies have focussed ‘?着’ is auxiliary word which express the past tense. However, this paper found through corpus the sentence has same meaning whatever ‘?着’ is used or not. The construction meaning of ‘?着’ is that speaker affirm her own conduct or the position she’s in, and it used under the pragmatic necessity. That’s why speaker use ‘?着’ construction. That is to say, the reason of speaker to use ‘?着’ construction is to get a face-saving of herself and minimizing antipathy of listener through strong insistence on the positiveness and integrity of her own conduct. In this paper, we’re basing the ‘Sympathy Maxim’ model of Leech and ‘Face-Saving’ model of Brown & Levinson.
Therefore, the construction meaning of ‘?着’ not allow the negative sentence and it need the words show something to be happened in past like ‘just (now)’, ‘yesterday’.
