This study is about the relationship between film and memory. Memory is the experience of life and knowhow accumulated over many generations. It is a huge reservoir in which the desire and reason, diverse attempts of the people have condensed. Film is the medium of actualization and transformation of the past and memory. According to how we use it, we gain different meaning and sense. So approaching to memory through film should be careful. We can sell the memory as a souvenir or emotional merchandise. In this case, commercialization of the memory means commercialization of experience of life and knowhow. And the people as a consumer lose a precious resource of life. The purpose of this study is prevent this case being occur.
<Bekind Rewind>(2007) of French filmmaker Michel Gondry shows the value of memory in the excellent manner. This film shows the people in Passaic create their own past, improve their capability of life and create happiness by their own power. Memory in this film, especially past movies and old jazz player Thomas fats Waller, is not a consumption object but a resource of creation. People in Passaic create their own present by means of memory. This is a self -genealogy of community.
Memory is public resource, not a consumption object. As Maurissio Lazzarato says, public resource is the product collaborated by the people, and it should be used for the all people. <Bekind Rewind> show us how film can assure this value of the memory.
