The purpose of this paper is to interpret Dylan Thoma’s poetry and world view based on Tao Te Ching. Although there is no evidence that Thomas read Lao-Tzu’ work, there are some parallels ‘Tao’ in Tao Te Ching and ‘darkness’ in Dylan Thoma’s poetry. The meaning of the Tao is hinted at “the dark female animal (玄牝)” which is the door of heaven and earth. Tao is also water that nourishes and benefits all things, the valley that is productive due to its lowliness. I relate “the dark female animal” with “the dark veins of her mother” in “A Refusal to Mourn the Death, by Fire, of a Child in London”, ‘Tao’ as water with water images in “Before I Knocked”, “Light Breaks Where No Sun Shines”, and “Poem in October.”
Thomas regards the female as the fountain of life in “A Refusal.” As Mother Earth has taken her daughter back to her bosom, so people return to Nature, which would mean the annihilation of the individual as individual, and reconnected with the Tao. I conclude that Thomas envisions that through death we can return into the organic cycle, through darkness we can reach light.
