Sociologists like Rodney Stark, William Sims Bainbridge and Eilene Barker have made important contributions to our understanding of why individuals join new religious movements. In doing so they have drawn attention to the role of friendship networks and the choices people make as they become members (Barker 1984; Stark and Bainbridge 1985). What they usually downplay or totally overlook is the importance of religious experiences to the new convert and the way these experiences are interpreted in terms of living stories that inspire their actions. This paper explores the reality and dynamic of vivid experiences that make sense within narrative frameworks provided by religious communities.
