This paper discusses Johnson’s (2001) claim that VP-ellipsis and VP-fronting (or VP-topicalization) are basically parallel. This paper observes that they are not as parallel as Johnson claims, and argues that they show different distributional properties. In addition, this study tries to explain why VP-ellipsis is more widely allowed than VP-fronting. For these purposes, this paper bases its theoretical apparatus on the notion of phase and its non-rigid definitions (den Dikken 2007 and Bo?kovi? 2014 among others). The observed non-parallelism between VP-ellipsis and VP-fronting is shown to follow by non-rigidly defining phases with respect to ellipsis and movement. It is eventually concluded that movement is more restricted than ellipsis in that the former is governed by locality in terms of the Intervention Effect and the PIC while the latter is not.
