Objective: The aim of this study is to quantitatively investigate the effects of obesity on joint kinematics during lifting.
Background: Obesity is considered as one of the potential risk factors for work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD) including lifting-related low back pain (LBP). As obesity is dramatically on the rise in many countries, the relationship between obesity and lifting-related LBP is of growing interest. However, little is known about the impact of obesity on lifting behavior, including lifting kinematics.
Method: Six severely obese (BMI≥35kg𝑚m² ) and six non-obese participants (18.5kg/m² ≤ BMI ≤24.9 kg/m² ) performed sagittally symmetric box lifting. For each participant, optical markers were placed on anatomical landmarks and lifting movement data were collected using an optical motion capture system. Five different joint angles were measured over time.
Results: Severely obese participants tended to choose more stooped posture (flexing the hip rather than knee) compared with the control group at the beginning of the lifting motion. Also, for some of the body joints, the two participant groups showed differences in joint kinematic variables, including joint angle excursion and peak flexion angle.
Conclusion: It was found that obesity affects joint kinematics during manual lifting. Further investigation is needed to understand the physical impacts of obesity-related lifting kinematics.
Application: Understanding the obesity impacts on lifting kinematics may help design lifting tasks safe for workers with different physical characteristics.
