제주시 외도동 일대의 문화재 조사과정에서 한반도 내륙에 나타나는 토양쐐기 구조를 보이는 퇴적층이 확인되었다. 이 퇴적층은 크게 상부에 고고학적 유물을 포함하는 유물층(unit I)과 하부의 토양쐐기 구조를 보이는 퇴적층(unit II)으로 구분되며, 상하부 층은 부정합 관계로 접한다. 퇴적층의 방사성 탄소연대 측정결과 상부 유물층은 약 1,700년에서 2,000년의 연대범위를 보였고, 하부의 토양쐐기 퇴적층은 광여기루미네선스(OSL) 분석결과 3만2천년에서 7만5천년의 연대범위를 보였다. 따라서 제주시 외도동 퇴적층 하부의 토양쐐기는 춥고 건조한 시기의 겨울 몬순 기후의 영향을 받았을 가능성이 있으며, 추가적인 연구를 통하여 빙하기 동안 제주 지역에 나타난 기후 영향에 대한 정보를 얻을 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
