The purpose of this study is to investigate the phenomena of determination and depletion in English and Korean, and to improve international communication skills in the globalizational world. Korean learners of English tend to make errors in selecting the proper English words in sentences or utterances. We can attribute most of these errors to the differences between determination and depletion in English and Korean, resulting from cross-lingual or cross-cultural differences. There are some determinative words and depletive words in the two languages. But the two languages have different degrees and ways in the determination and depletion. For example, Korean has only one word `shigye` for `an instrument for measuring and showing time` but English has two different words, i.e. `watch`, and `clock`. Korean has many words such as `mo, pye, ssal, pab` for `rice` of English. The differences come from different socio-cultural situations as well as different lexemes, semantic domains between the languages. The differences between determination and depletion in the languages make Korean learners of English confuse in the selection of proper words. In particular, when vocabularies are used depletively in English but determinatively in Korean. Korean learners of English have a difficulty in choosing the proper words. Because they don`t understand the differences of subtle meanings among English depletive words. Therefore, when we study foreign words, we should learn them in proper contexts such as "You are making a big/*large mistake", "I`ll have my hair (mo˘ri) cut; He has too big head (mo˘ri) for his body; He has a brilliant brain (mo˘ri)". "Speak slowly; She said nothing on the matter; I told him the truth; Don`t talk back to me". The study on determination and depletion in English and Korean will help us to select more proper words, and make our communication more effectively in the globalizational world.
