The musical <Notre-Dame de Paris>, based on the Victor Hugo’s novel, has been known as one of the representative French musicals since it has been premiered in 1998. The work not only announced the revival of French musicals but also presented the characteristics of it, which are absent of dialogue in a recitative style, succession of the traditional French musical dramas, and suggestion of the new form of musicals, as the French spectacle musical. In this work, the music is given varied significances and roles as one of dramatic functions in attempts to solve the limitations of the spectacle musical form such as the diminution of dramatic reality. In this research, the music of the work is studied to prove how to perform its dramatic roles in narrative and mise-en-scene to construct the semantic network. Emphasizing of psychological descriptions of its main characters and conflicts between incidents in the drama through the shifting of tonalities and contrast between harmonies and elucidating of its background and realistic stage through musical symbol and description are identified by practical analysis of its music. The given roles of its music as new understanding of dramatic device are classified and determined and it will be helpful to consider the music how to affect the semantic network construction and convey meaning and theme of the work to audience.
