This study is to analyze representation of the youth shown in Son, Chang-seob’s serial novels in newspapers. His serial novels in newspapers are closely connected to the situation of politics and society of 1960s and it reflects identity of a social class as well as awareness of society issues among the public. Also, it shows rapidly changing generation of Korean society and moral regulations through love affairs happening between male and female characters who just had become old generation. Those characters who are playing unique roles in his novel are in their 20s either university students or people who are starting out a career. They confront with old generation due to difference in moral regulation or they reveal irrationality by showing resistance against society.
This study particularly analyzed representation of the youth shown in his novels titled 『husband and wife』, 『A classroom of human beings』, 『Father and Two Daughters』 and 『Sons』 that show confrontation between old generation and young generation. Son, Chang-seob criticizes hypocrisy and corruption among materialized old generation through young characters. First type of young people is stuck in the self-contradiction or copies old generation during the process of fighting against old generation. Second type of young people reflects on corruption of Korean society and dreams of becoming a new father. Son, Chang-seob diagnoses corruption of Korean society while showing hopes for future through representation of the youth. Representation of the youth is meaningful as it criticizes corruption of Korean society but it also has limitations since it accepts the national ideology of the time.
