Starting with a general overview of [h] from an acoustic perspective and then observing a sharp contrast in the frequency of use of this sound between babbling and early speech, this paper considers how the loss of [h] is associated with the development of an infant's brain, particularly in the transition of the two stages of phonological development. In doing so, this paper chiefly focuses on finding any principle determining the direction of synaptic activities with regard to the loss of this voiceless glottal fricative sound. It is generally agreed among scientists that synapses may be involved in both increasing and decreasing, depending on an infant's experience, or linguistic environment. Following Sachs' (1988) principle of epigenetic selection, one of which states that events are developed that are different or complementary, the loss of [h] can be plausible accounted for since it is observed that no language of the world is of a pair of voiceless glottal fricative and its voiced counterpart, as given in the 'Handbook of the International Phonetic Association.' Facing this new linguistic environment during the transition, it is understood that the synapses are expected to prune for this asymmetrical sound.
