Published literature reveals that L2 vocabulary learning can be enhanced by studying words explicitly using a list. The literature also emphasizes the importance of learning the most frequent and essential words first, which can be found in the General Service List and the Academic Word List.
With the help of computer technology, a specialized word list can be readily developed. Thus, the goals of this paper are to build a specialized corpus, to analyze the profiles of it, and to create a list of essential words for Korean high school students preparing for the university entrance exam.
In order to achieve these goals, I used several strategies. First, I compiled text from the national exams used from year 2005 to year 2014. Then, I used an online vocabulary analysis program, Vocabprofile in Compleat Lexical Tutor, to generate the vocabulary profiles of the exams. Finally, I analyzed the profiles and generated a list of essential English words for Korean Scholastic Aptitude Test, which will be called the KSAT list.
