A Buddhist statue of Late Joseon, height of 98.8cm, is enshrined in Wonhyo hermitage in Geumjeong-gu, Busan. Lately, pre-inspection inside the statue has been carried out for repair. In this process, about 30 kinds of halidom including scriptures of 15th century like The Lotus Sutra, The Diamond Sutra, Kwan-yin sentence inside huryeongtong and a patron’s prayer have been identified. The fact that the statue was originally enshrined in Youngeun temple in Hamyang and created by monk sculptor called Seongjo was revealed through the patron’s prayer. The purpose of this paper is to find out the historical significance of the Buddhist statue by analyzing the characteristics of the statue and the school that monk sculptor belonged to through existing works and concrete evidence.
The statue in Wonhyo hermitage was made by monk sculptor, Seongjo, who belonged to the school of Seungil in late 17th century and features straight face, imposing body, simple clothing wrinkles and the fancy way of storage. Seungil school which Seongjo belonged to is classified into two lineages. One is a wooden Buddha lineage inherited from Seungil to Seongjo to Jagyu and the other is a stoned one inherited from Seungil to Kyeongok to Sameung. It seemed that monk sculptors of those two mostly worked in Gyeongsang region. Seongjo, belonged to a wooden Buddha lineage, worked with Seungil for 20 years. The wooden statue of the Buddha in Wonhyo hermitage is a crucial material for understanding the flow of Korean Buddhist sculptures of the 17th century because unlike the other ones from the same school, it accurately reflects the formative features such as presentation of figure and clothing wrinkles from his mentor, Seungil.
