The tradition of simplified expression of the subject focusing on its characteristics was maintained for a long time in the prehistoric and ancient Korean art. The dot and line engravings of Cheonjeon-ri Petroglyphs also share such tradition. However, the geometric patterns that were etched over the dotted engravings move away from such older tradition.
The geometric patterns of Cheonjeon-ri Petroglyphs are closer to symbolic signs and are related to the communication methods during the Bronze Age. As the social structure became more complex and the necessity for expressing natural phenomenon and concepts grew, the symbolic geometric patterns were developed and utilized. The decorative patterns on the Bronze Age bronze mirrors and ceremonial wares can also be seen in the same light.
However as the people adopted Chinese characters which had more systematic foundations, the symbols failed to develop into a letter system. With Chinese characters, people no longer needed symbolic diagrams and such symbolic language went extinct rapidly. The geometric patterns became simple decorations or disappeared and line drawings and Chinese characters took their former place.
However, even with the adoption of Chinese characters, the images continued to hold general communication functions. The delicate line engravings of Cheonjeonri Petroglyphs and the line engravings of the clayware with decorations from the Three Kingdoms Period show that images were used as means of communication during the historic period. Cheonjeon-ri Petroglyphs are valuable in that they show the roles and functions of images, geometric symbols, and letters as communicative means in prehistoric and historic period.
