The purpose of this study was to identify actual profile of eating disorder shown in female undergraduates who major in dance, and demonstrate how much their BMI, body self-image and related variables may have effects on potential eating disorder. To meet the goals, this study surveyed total 333 female undergraduates who majored in dance across 7 universities located in domestic metropolitan cities(ballet: 104, Korean dance: 132, modern dance: 97). In this study, Eating Disorder Inventory-2 was adopted as measurement tool to measure their eating disorder, and calculate BMI based on their weight and height. The results of multivariate analysis of variance(MANOVA) to demonstrate potential differences depending on factors can be outlined as follows: It was found that the younger undergraduates had higher discontent with their body type and more desires for slimmer figure, and relatively late menarche group and irregular menstruation group showed higher hyperphagia than other groups. In addition, there were relatively high eating disorder groups, including undergraduates who had ever controlled their weight, those who tried to control their weights along with someone for the first time after experiencing dance art, and those who usually controlled their weight by purgative or equivalent medicines. In particular, it was found that undergraduates who had been injured with relatively high frequency (4 to 6 times) over last 1 year tended to show high risks of eating disorder, and on the basis of BMI measurements, both normal weight and overweight groups showed higher risk of eating disorder than underweight group. And it was notable that certain undergraduates who had distorted or negative ideas on their weight and health conditions had relatively high risk of eating disorder. More seriously, it was found that most of undergraduates had higher tendency to consider underweight as normal weight(61.8%), and consider normal weight as overweight (74.2%). Therefore, it is urgently demanded to prepare possible countermeasures for this seriousness of risk factors working on eating disorder of female undergraduates who major in dance art.
