Since the opening of Gyeong-bu Expressway in 1970, the national transportation network in Korea has greatly been developed in quality and quantity. Expanding a new expressway is still promoted under the 7x9 Master plan where the nation’sl regions connected to each other. Arterial roads also keep expanding in order to provide accessibility for the regions where expressway services could not be covered. Besides, these arterials also have a pivotal role in relieving expressway congestion by providing alternative routes for congested expressways. Although the growth of a national network is ongoing and there are many efforts to collect a basic statistics (i.e : total road length, traffic volume of cordon/screen lines and Origin and Destination trip table), there has been little works to researching the travel behavior of drivers or vehicles in detail.
The goal of this study is to analyze the characteristics of vehicle travel behavior and compare it with other countries’ travelling behavior. Specifically, this study is designed to serve as a reference for planners as they enact road policies or study the feasibility of nationwide road construction plan. The research scope can be categorized into two folds: Traffic congestion and Accidents. Two main factors are examined by considering driver’s travel behavior and road design elements on a detailed level where each of the selected networks is disaggregated into small sections.
The research highlights the facts that congestion and accidents are highly affected by traffic density, high rate of trucks, vehicle volume, and variance among vehicle speeds on a section. These findings suggest three main idea: 1) the way to improve safety of a national transportation network, 2) The way to prove more convenient roads for users, and 3) the method to develop or amend relevant laws. The suggested idea is expected to improve a safety level and to reduce road congestion significantly. With the importance of big data, constructing a detailed level of database could contribute to establishing an efficient framework for designing network planning and for traffic operations.
Through the application of this research, we hope to trigger further studies and to contribute to developing road policies and planning.
