Sim Dae-yun(1806〜1872)’s basic position on Chinese classics is to embrace the spirits of worshiping and respecting the monarch. He, however, maintains the position that Three Rites cannot be accepted as the saint’s scriptures. In 1872, a few months before he died, he wrote the Right Interpretation of Book of Rites, The Right Theory on Rites, and Criticism on the Rites of Zhou, with the attachment of truth and falsehood comments thereto, as well as his own right interpretation, right theories and criticism.
Regarding the classical text and quotations (the Zixia Chapter) in the Right Theory on Rites and Mourning Clothes, he argued about truth and falsehood, and added his comments thereto, and that is the Right Theory. Sim Dae-yun’s Right Theory discusses the author’s position on mourning clothes as follows. First, the rite system should be set up according to the times’ customs. Second, mourning clothes should be convenient and cost-effective. Third, the period for wearing mourning clothes and the mourning clothes system should not be distinguished between men and women. Fourth, the king’s and his subjects’ limitations should be strictly applied, and public and private things should be distinguished. Fifth, there should be distinction between the legitimate child and the child of a concubine, and between the eldest son of the head family and the commoner. This spirit of Sim Dae-yun’s Uirye jeongnon is deemed to be a bridge in the development of the mental system of subsequent 20th century early modern and modern rite studies, namely, non-class, practicality, usefulness, and simplicity.
